Man hit by Metro train Sunday identified

WASHINGTON – The 21-year-old who was struck and killed by a Metro train early Sunday morning has been identified as Patrick Sibley, a rising senior and star volleyball player at George Mason University.

Metro says Sibley was walking on the Orange Line tracks between East Falls Church and Ballston when he was hit around 2 a.m.

Coaches, teammates and the George Mason University athletics department mourned the loss Sibley in a statement issued Monday.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends, teammates, and all who are affected by this tragedy,” athletic director Tom O’Connor said in the statement.

Volleyball coach Fred Chao called Sibley “a world-class athlete,” adding that “it was his love for his teammates and friends that shined the brightest.”

David Lucas, a teammate of Sibley’s, said that “Pat’s impact on the volleyball court was unmatched.” He added, however, that “his impact in our lives reached far beyond the sport itself.”

Sibley played one season at Sacred Heart University, in Fairfield, Conn., before coming to George Mason last year. He sat out one year before playing last season and making the All-Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association first team all- stars. His older brother, Shaun, was a teammate.

It’s not clear why Sibley was on the tracks; the accident is under investigation.
