High-speed chase ends in crash near high school

WASHINGTON – A high-speed chase ended in a crash not far from Herndon High School Tuesday morning, police say.

Herndon Police Lt. Jim Moore says a patrol officer tried to stop a sport utility vehicle for speeding around 7:15 a.m.

The SUV pulled into a shopping center but didn’t stop and got back on Elden Street. That prompted a police chase toward Herndon Parkway and Dranesville Road.

Moore says a police supervisor called off the pursuit as the chase approached the high school.

The SUV kept going through a red light at Dranesville Road and Wiehle Avenue. Police say it struck a vehicle in the intersection and the SUV driver lost control. The SUV rolled several times.

Police say the SUV’s driver and passenger were taken to the hospital. The extent of the injuries is unknown. Police say no one else was injured.
