Police: Suicidal gunman reported at Fairfax Co. courthouse

UPDATE: The man surrendered peacefully around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

WASHINGTON – Police surrounded the Fairfax County courthouse on Saturday evening after reports of a suicidal gunman on the top level of the garage.

Police say the man was sitting in his vehicle when they arrived.

Authorities cut off access to the courthouse to protect public safety. They have cordoned Judicial Drive, which loops from Main Street to Chain Bridge Road, while they handle the situation.

A member of the crisis unit plans to approach the man slowly and methodically, police say.

Police say this is not a hostage situation and there is no threat to public safety.
