GREAT FALLS, Va. – What would you do with a million dollars? A Maryland man is facing that dilemma after winning big in a Virginia lottery.
Warner Ashby bought about 20 tickets for the Virginia New Year’s Millionaire Raffle. The Rockville man who works as a chauffeur claimed his prize Thursday.
He says he didn’t check his tickets until he read online that the winning ticket was purchased at the 7-11 on Georgetown Pike in Great Falls where had bought his tickets.
“I started immediatly going through my tickets and of course the numbers matched up and I said ‘Holy moly this can’t be right.'”
But it was.
Ashby, now a millionaire, is one of three people who won a million dollars in the raffle.
Ashby, who has been driving people around the Washington region for 20 years, took Thursday off to accept his check but he says he will continue to work.
He says he was reluctant to talk to the media because he’s worried once people find out he’s won a million the tips may get a bit smaller.
He has no immediate plans to spend the money though he says he will visit his daughter and granddaughter in Tennessee and may take a trip to Hawaii.
The store where the ticket was sold also gets $10,000 from the Virginia Lottery. The other two winning million dollar tickets were sold in Clarksville and Stuart’s Draft.
