Honolulu airport overseas arrivals area gets fans

HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu International Airport is getting new ceiling fans to cool down an outdoor area heavily used by travelers arriving from Japan.

The Japan Hawaii Travel Association paid for 32 ceiling fans newly installed in the outdoor exit area of the International Arrivals Building.

This area can get hot and humid because surrounding parking and airport structures block the flow of trade winds. The heat is even more pronounced when hundreds of newly arrived travelers crowd the area waiting for buses or other transportation.

The association said Wednesday it spent more than $3,300 on the fans. Airport personnel installed them and will provide maintenance as needed.

The association is nonprofit organization made up of Hawaii travel companies. It’s dedicated to increasing travel demand from Japan and improving the Hawaii visitor experience.
