DEVELOPING: Upset Possible in County Board Election

Polling place in Arlington (file photo)(Updated at 7:55 p.m.) The results are still coming in the special election to replace Chris Zimmerman (D) on the Arlington County Board.

Light voter turnout was reported today, which could benefit Republican- and Green-endorsed independent candidate John Vihstadt. Arguably, with this election, Vihstadt has the best shot at being the first non-Democrat on the Board in years.

Republican Mike Lane served briefly on the County Board after winning a special election in 1999, but lost in the general election several months later. Similarly, the winner of today’s special election will need to run for reelection this fall.

With 44 of 53 precincts reporting, the results are as follows:

  • Alan Howze (D): 41%
  • John Vihstadt (I): 57%
  • Stephen Holbrook (I): 1%
  • Janet Murphy: (IG): 1%
