Expect lots of delays out on the roads this weekend

WASHINGTON — Motorists should expect large numbers of motorcyclists out on the roads in Northern Virginia and throughout the entire Washington Metropolitan area over the Memorial Day weekend.

Rolling Thunder riders will start gathering on Sunday at the Pentagon at 7a.m. so some road closures will be in effect as early as 5 a.m. Riders will leave the Pentagon crossing the Memorial Bridge which will be closed to traffic and ride into Washington at noon.

D.C. Closures:

5:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Henry Bacon Drive and French Drive
  • West Basin Drive
  • Ohio Drive (River Side) from Inlet Bridge to Independence Avenue

6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Constitution Avenue from 23rd Street to 3rd Street
  • 17th from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue
  • Ohio Drive and Rock Creek Parkway from Independence Avenue to Virginia Avenue
  • A, B, C, lots at Hains Point
  • Both Madison and Jefferson Drive from 3rd Street to 15th Street
  • 15 Street (northbound only)

11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • 23rd Street from Constitution to LMC Circle
  • 15th Street (southbound only)

Virginia Closures

7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Washington Boulevard (Route 27) will be closed from I-395 to the Memorial Bridge.

8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Southbound GWMP ramp to Washington Boulevard
  • Southbound Boundary Channel Drive ramp to Washington Boulevard

9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Northbound GWMP at the split to Memorial Bridge
  • Memorial Drive at ramp from southbound GWMP
  • Memorial Avenue at exit from Arlington National Cemetery Visitor Center (All traffic exits to S/B 110 or wrong way around Memorial Circle to 50 or northbound GWMP)

Arlington National Cemetery will only be accessible from southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway or northbound Route 110.

Expect delays on I-95 and I-66

Beginning at 8 a.m., thousands of motorcyclists will travel I-95 and I-66 to the Pentagon as part of the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride. State and local police will escort the riders, according Virginia Department of Transportation.

About 2,000 motorcycles will enter the northbound I-95 HOV lanes just north of Dale City in Prince William County, and another 2,000 will enter I-66 from Manassas and head east to the Pentagon. Overhead message signs will alert motorists to expect delays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
