Police warn about the rise of theft at the gas pump

WASHINGTON – Are you on guard when you get gas? If you’re not, then you could become the victim of a thief just steps away.

If you keep a purse or something of value that is visible on the front seat of the car, police say it’s a crime opportunity and that you should be locking your car doors while at the pump.

Prince George’s County police have posted a video online telling drivers to lock their doors when they go to fill up. Another tip is to store valuables out of sight and in glove boxes or consoles instead.

Police have investigated more than 30 gas station thefts in the past month alone.
