Openings and closings for Columbus Day

WASHINGTON — Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but for many people it’s just another day on the job that can bring changes to the daily commute and routine.

HOV restrictions will be lifted on Maryland and Virginia roadways with the exception of Route 50 in Maryland.

Rush hour reversible lanes will revert to regular two-way traffic on travel routes like Rock Creek Parkway, Canal Road, Connecticut Avenue and Chain Bridge.

Metrorail will operate on a Saturday schedule. Metro buses will also run on a Saturday schedule with some additional trips on selected routes. Parking is free on Metro lots.

VRE trains won’t run on Columbus Day. On MARC trains, there’ll be no service on the Brunswick and Camden lines. It will be a Saturday schedule on the Penn line.

Some commuter buses have schedule changes on the federal holiday; some don’t.

The Fairfax Connector will operate on a holiday weekday schedule. Alexandria’s Dash Bus service will be on a Saturday schedule. The King Street Trolley will run on its regular schedule. ART buses in Arlington will be on a Saturday schedule.

Montgomery County’s RideOn buses will operate on a regular weekday schedule. Prince George’s County’s TheBus will run normal service, except for route 51 that serves county government buildings, which are closed.

There’ll be no parking meter or residential parking zone enforcement in D.C. and Alexandria. Parking meters will be in regular service in Arlington and Montgomery counties.

Federal and state offices, and the courts are closed on Columbus Day and there’s no regular mail delivery. Be sure to check with your employer to see if there are changes in the work schedule.

Montgomery County does not celebrate Columbus Day. County offices and schools will be open, but the libraries will be closed.

Prince Georges County government offices will be closed, but the schools will be open.

Arlington County government offices will be open. But the public schools are closed for a teacher’s day.

Fairfax County government offices, schools and public libraries will be closed.

All city offices in Alexandria will be closed.

Loudoon County government offices, libraries and schools will be closed.

Prince William County government offices and public libraries are closed; the schools are closed for a professional learning day.
