Park police warn against playing on ice

WASHINGTON – It’s tempting for kids to test the ice in a nearby pond or creek, but it can be deadly.

Maryland National Capital Park Police and Prince George’s County schools are reminding parents to teach their kids to stay off ponds, creeks or streams even if they look frozen solid.

If someone is spotted on the ice in a park administered by the National Capital Park police, the organization says it wants people to call 301-459-9088. All winter recreation on ice-covered ponds, lakes and streams is prohibited on park property.

If a person or animal falls through the ice, park police advise calling 911 and staying on the bank.

Last month a Gaithersburg boy died after falling through the ice in a storm water pond.
