Emergency repaving work nears finish in Chevy Chase

WASHINGTON – Emergency paving work on Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase is almost complete with some finishing touches on the project still needed.

New blacktop stretches in both directions on Connecticut Avenue from just north of East West Highway to Chevy Chase Circle. Bright white pedestrian crosswalks are marked.

But pavement on the northern and western portions of Chevy Chase Circle remained a milled-down, rough surface Monday. Transition areas from new Connecticut Avenue asphalt onto side streets were a milled-down mess at many intersections.

Lane separation indicators on Connecticut Avenue now consist of white rectangular boxes spaced more than a car length apart.

In observance of Labor Day, Maryland State Highway crews and contractors will not work on the project Monday evening into Tuesday morning. It was not clear when work would resume.

Last Wednesday, Aug. 27 lane closures for the paving project in Chevy Chase unexpectedly stretched into the morning rush hour and then continued around the clock until the new road surface was put down.

A spokesman for Maryland State Highway apologized for not giving motorists fair warning to make alternate travel plans, telling WTOP the lane closures became necessary when crews discovered the underlying road bed was far more damaged than expected.
