Cherry blossom trees near best look, attract visitors (Photos)

WASHINGTON — White and pink flowers dot the sky around the Tidal Basin as D.C.’s cherry blossom trees approach full bloom.

On Wednesday morning, many people visited the tidal basin to snap pictures of the cherry blossoms, which are days away from looking their best, says Brian Hall, a spokesman for the National Mall and Memorial Parks.

“Peak bloom actually means that 70 percent of the trees around the tidal basin are in full bloom,” Hall says.

Full peak bloom will likely be Thursday or Friday, Hall says.

Earlier this season, the National Park Service predicted the peak bloom would occur between April 8 and April 12.

The Hess family from Hampton, Va., took advantage of the trees’ beautiful blooms Wednesday.

“We got the kids dressed up for pictures and we are taking in the sights,” Jimmy Hess says.
