Saving on gas as the prices spike

WASHINGTON – There are small ways to save money as gas prices rise across the country.

In the last week, prices have spiked by 14 cents. It’s an increase drivers haven’t seen since February of this year, according to AAA.

While looking for the best prices around town is the most effective way to save, the Department of Energy says making small changes can help save fuel as well.

The DEO recommends emptying the trunk — a change that can mean 2 percent in savings. Driving the speed limit will save between 7 and 14 percent, according to the DOE’s FuelEconomy.gov.

Mobile apps like Gas Buddy and AAA’s Triptik can help drivers locate the cheapest gas stations near them.

In D.C., the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.80. It’s slightly less in Maryland and Virginia.
