Veterans use holiday to help homeless vets

WASHINGTON – Veterans Day provides a time for the nation to do what it can to thank and honor those who have risked everything for the nation’s freedom.

At a cafeteria for the homeless in Northwest D.C., it is a day for veterans to do what they can to help their fellow vets in need.

“A disproportionate number of chronic homeless are veterans,” says Clint Trocchio, an active-duty member of the Coast Guard. “That’s not an unsolvable challenge.”

Trocchio is among a group of volunteers comprised of former and current members of the military helping to feed homeless veterans at Miriam’s Kitchen.

“To the extent that I can help out these veterans, I’m all for it,” he says.

According to officials at the facility, about 25 percent of chronically homeless guests who visit the kitchen are typically veterans.

“They’ve served our country and they’ve done so much for us,” says Steven Badt, senior director of meals and volunteer engagement.

“I think as a society we owe it back to them.”
