Government Shutdown Could Hurt Federal Contractors — Workers at Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin will show up on Tuesday, the first day of a federal government shutdown. Lockheed says its employees will continue to receive pay and benefits for the time being. During the 1996 government shutdown, Lockheed workers didn’t get paid for three weeks and weren’t reimbursed back wages when the government finally came up with a budget. About $3.7 billion, or 20 percent of federal contracts to Washington-area companies were hurt by the 196 shutdown. [The Gazette]
Maryland Health Care Exchange Now Open — Uninsured adults between the ages of 18 and 64 can now sign up for health care coverage as the Affordable Care Act goes into effect. The individual mandate of the law requires all residents to have coverage by Jan. 1, 2014 or face fines.
