WASHINGTON – Authorities say a woman in labor didn’t make it to the hospital and gave birth in a vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 270 during rush hour.
Maryland State Police and Montgomery County fire and rescue crews were called to southbound I-270 near Route 118 in the Germantown area around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
Police say the mother and baby were taken to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.
Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Scott Graham tweeted the following update about mother and baby:
Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a spokesman for the fire department, says the baby girl was born before crews arrived. He says the mother, baby and father are all doing well.
The birth comes just two weeks after a woman had a baby inside the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station.
The baby boy was delivered on the station platform with the help of an emergency medical technician, who happened to be switching trains.
Shavonnte Taylor had been heading to her home in D.C. after a doctor’s appointment near the Foggy Bottom station, when she started having contractions.
The baby’s birth led to a flurry of tweets with suggested Metro-influenced names for the newborn, who was eventually named Amir Mason.
