Local service drives scared drivers across Bay Bridge

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – It is a short drive, but for some, traveling across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge triggers a panic attack.

“There’s a lot of people that will close their eyes and cover their head,” says Brittney Manzoni, manager of Kent Island Express.

“The height, the water and the incline to get to the top, they feel like they’re on a roller coaster.”

Manzoni’s business takes skittish drivers from one end of the bridge to the other.

“We pick people up that are scared to cross,” says employee Jason Lowery.

“We come over with two people in a car. One person will get out of the car, get in the customer’s car and drive them across the bridge.”

Kent Island Express saw a spike business after last week’s crash that sent a car plunging 40 feet off the bridge into the water below.

According to Manzoni, the accident brought to life the fears of her customers.

“We had a lot of calls the next couple days after that for obvious reason,” she says. “We have had an individual ask to ride in the trunk before.

“They didn’t want to hear or see anything that was going on. They just wanted to block it out.”

The business sees anywhere from 3 to 30 calls on any given day.
