WASHINGTON – A local university more than 200 years old now has solar panels, and the White House is taking notice.

Students at Georgetown University unveiled their completed two-year project, “Solar Street,” Thursday morning.

“It’s an absolutely wonderful thing,” says Gary Guzy, deputy director of the White House Council of Environmental Quality. “To see youth so focused on accomplishments in this area is really gratifying.”

Students in the Georgetown Energy team worked with administrators and outside companies to install solar panels on six college-owned townhouses.

“It ends up being about $3,000 in savings a year,” says project leader Dan Mathis. “Twenty-seven percent of all the townhouse energy will be supplied by the solar panels.”

It combines new technology with a very old institution. The group says it provides a model for future student-led initiatives.
