County-by-county: Trash and debris pick-up in D.C. area

WASHINGTON – The storm will affect trash collection across the region.

Here is what various jurisdictions are doing:

Montgomery County

Montgomery County canceled trash and recycling collections on Monday and Tuesday. The county will resume trash and recycling operations Wednesday.

The schedule will slide by 2 days. Monday customers will be picked up on Wednesday, Tuesday customers, on Thursday, Wednesday customers, on Friday; Thursday customers, on Saturday; and Friday customers on Sunday, with normal service expected to resume on Monday, November 5.

If the community has a private contract for trash collection, or if the resident lives in a municipality, this schedule shift may not apply to their service, and residents should check with the hauler or community manager.

Tree debris will be collected on residents’ regular recycling day. It must be no more than four-feet in length and four inches in diameter. The city requests residents bag or bundle tree branches and limbs keeping them at less than 45 pounds per bundle.

Tree debris can also be dropped off at no charge at the Shady Grove Processing Facility at 16101 Frederick Road, Derwood, Md. For more information on debris disposal, click here.

Prince George’s County

Prince George’s County has suspended trash collection countywide Tuesday. Trash collection and debris collection will resume Wednesday.

Residents who want more information should call 301-780-8313 or visit the county’s website.

Howard County

Regular trash collection and recycling is canceled in Howard County on Tuesday, and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be closed.

Trash and recycling will return to a slide schedule on Wednesday, according to the county’s website.

Virginia

Alexandria

Trash collection has been suspended in Alexandria on Tuesday. It will resume on Wednesday with a delayed schedule.

  • Monday’s collection will now occur on Wednesday.
  • Tuesday’s collection will occur on Thursday.
  • Wednesday’s collection will occur on Friday.
  • Thursday’s collection occur on Saturday.

Crews will be collecting tree debris from the curb and public rights-of-way over the next week, according to a news release. The city requests residents place debris on the curb in pieces that can be safely handled.

Leaf collection services will resume Monday, Nov. 5. Bags will be collected at the front curb one business day after residents’ regular refuse collection day.

Arlington County

In Arlington County, officials have suspended trash pickup through Tuesday. Trash and recycling services will resume Wednesday, as will brush and leaf collection.

Monday/Tuesday pickup is rescheduled for Wednesday, Wednesday/Thursday pickup is rescheduled for Thursday, and Friday pickup is normal.

Note, it may take an additional day for pickup on some routes, but pickup is expected to be completed by Saturday.

For storm debris, the county requests residents make an appointment online or call 703-228-6570. The restriction that brush must be less than 18-inches in diameter is waived.

Fairfax County

Trash pickup previously canceled for residents who have trash pickup on Tuesdays will resume on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Residents on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday routes will receive trash and recycling collection service as normally scheduled. Please have trash and recycling containers to the curb by 6 a.m. on your collection day to ensure collection.

The county says it will have crews working through the week and into the weekend to pickup yard debris and that it will not conflict with trash collection. Residents with questions about their pickup should call 703-802-3322.

The District

The Department of Public Works postponed Monday and Tuesday’s trash and recycling collections. The city is asking residents to bag their leaves so they don’t collect in the storm drains and cause flooding.

Residents living in weekly trash pick-up areas are asked to hold onto their trash and recyclables until next Tuesday.
