Long lines clog early voting stations region-wide

WASHINGTON – Voters reported huge lines at early voting centers across the area on Saturday, the first day of early voting in the region.

WTOP received widespread reports of long lines in Maryland and especially in D.C., where voters said it was taking two hours or more to cast a ballot.

Councilmember Muriel Bowser said Saturday the Board of Elections was facing record turnout in the District. It moved machines around to the polling places with the longest lines.

Commenters on the D.C. Board of Elections Facebook page expressed frustrations with the situation.

“I stood in line for 1 hour at Columbia Heights and walked away!,” wrote Shan Abeywickrama. “True DC incompetence as there are only two machines and a line snaking through the auditorium.”

Saturday was the first day of early voting, with one voting location open in each ward

In both D.C. and Maryland, anyone who wants to can vote early.
