WASHINGTON – Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel are sporting magenta-pink T-shirts this week in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness.

October is the annual National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and pink ribbons have been the international symbol since 1992.

Firefighters and emergency responders will wear their support for breast cancer research as they answer emergency and non-emergency calls.

Local organizations funded the purchase of the shirts.

The department has continued this tradition for a several years and staff members have joined their peers in raising awareness. At their 2010 convention, the International Association of Firefighters approved a resolution to encourage its members to support campaigns honoring victims fighting breast cancer.
