WASHINGTON – Kids in Prince George’s County got free backpacks and supplies at a back to school fair Saturday, just two days before the start of the new school year.
The event also gave parents a chance to sign their kids up for school, learn more about before and after school programs, and PTA registration.
Kimberly Cyberg says her main goal was to get SAT information for her son, and although he may not be looking forward to the school year, she is.
“It’s been a long summer, but a good summer,” Cyberg says.
The fair was held at The Show Place Arena and Prince George’s Equestrian Center.
Prince George’s County schools will also start the year with a new superintendent.
Alvin Crawley will take over for departing schools chief William Hite, who’s leaving this fall to run Philadelphia Public Schools.
Crawley previously served as administrator in the D.C. Public Schools Office of Special Education. In his 32 year career, Crawley has also worked in Arlington, Boston, and Chicago
Randa Lee, whose son Jeremiah Chapin will be starting the seventh grade at Kettering Middle School, welcomes the change in leadership.
“I’m excited to see what the new superintendent’s going to do, and the different heights he will be taking up,” Lee says.
