WASHINGTON – A Metro employee hit by a train Tuesday is in critical condition, according to Metro investigators. The man was pinned by a train at the Shady Grove Yard shortly before 1 p.m.

The employee, a 28-year veteran mechanic at Metro, was hit in the car wash facility, according to investigators. Eye-witnesses say the man stepped into the path of the lead railcar.

He was pinned underneath for about one hour as rescue crews worked to extricate him.

Metro Transit Police, Office of Emergency Management, Car Maintenance, Office of Rail Transportation and Department of System Safety & Environmental Management responded to the scene and performed an initial on-site investigation.

National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Transit Administration and Tri-State Oversight Committee representatives also responded.

The train was not in service at the time of the accident and Red Line service was not affected.

Metro says safety practices are being reviewed.
