Sick of Starbucks? These coffees pack a punch for just pennies

WASHINGTON – Remember the days when a cup of coffee cost just 11 cents?

Well, those days may not be so far gone – if you’re willing to brew your own.

Cheapism, which brands itself on finding the best bangs for your bucks, rated a variety of home-brewed coffees and Yahoo put them to the taste test.

Folgers Black Silk is “strong, but not too strong,” according to Yahoo’s tasting panel. Online reviews say it’s dark and rich without being burnt and bitter. However, reviewers did say it tasted better with milk. A 27.8-ounce canister is less than $8.

From a brand that’s been around for more than 150 years, A&P’s Eight O’Clock original is “mellow yet full-bodied” says Yahoo. Twelve ounces of whole beans cost about $5, and reviewers prefer this coffee without the milk.

Dunkin’ Donuts Original Blend made the list — and its producers say it’s a premium coffee. It’s the pricier of the cheap coffees at $8.99 a pound. Reviewers say it’s a smooth and extremely mild coffee and has no lingering after taste.
