WASHINGTON – The D.C. Department of Health has named six applicants who can continue moving forward in their bids to establish medical marijuana cultivation centers in the District.
The applicants and their proposed center locations were named Friday after review by a six-member panel and input from Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. All of the locations are in the city’s Northeast quadrant.
Five are in Ward 5 — four clustered within a few blocks in the Langdon neighborhood of Northeast — and one is in Ward 7.
The applicants and their potential center locations are:

D.C. officials expect medical marijuana to bring in about $500,000 in taxes and fees in the program’s first four years. Patients will pay a 6 percent sales tax, even though the District does not tax prescription drugs.
Patients also will pay $100 per year for a registration card — an amount that can be lessened to $25 if patients qualify for assistance. Growers and sellers will pay multiple fees ranging from $25 to $10,000.
The applicants named Friday now must apply for business licenses, building permits, certificates of occupancy and meet other requirements before being registered to operate their cultivation centers.
The District is expected to announce five medical marijuana distribution centers on June 8. Officials hope to have those centers open by the end of the year.
