Taylor Gourmet gets into the District’s pizza game

The latest in the D.C. area’s crowded pizza market comes from Taylor Gourmet, the local deli chain that has developed a cult-like following for its Philadelphia-style hoagie sandwiches.

Pizza Parts & Service opened Monday at 1320 H St. NE, where the Taylor folks previously operated Taylor Charles Steak & Ice cheese steak and shaved ice restaurant. Taylor Charles opened in December 2012 and closed in January.

The restaurant doesn’t follow the same model as many of the pizza joints that have opened in the District recently, with their fast-casual single-serve pies that customers can customize as they order. Instead, Pizza Parts & Service offers pizza by the slice as its single-serve option — a welcome offering for this native New Yorker — and larger pizzas in three different sizes meant to share.

There are a handful of pre-designed pizzas in the red, white and specialty categories, as well as the option to craft your own from the restaurant’s more-than-two-dozen-toppings list.

The menu also includes garlic knots, calzones and wings in six different flavors, including Old Bay, sriracha honey and red hot garlic cilantro.

The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-3:30 a.m. to cater to the late night crowd on Friday and Saturday. Pizza Parts & Service also plans to start delivery to the neighborhood in the next two weeks.

It will compete with &pizza (pronounced “and pizza”) — the fast-casual pizza spot less than two blocks away that serves individually-sized, customizable pizzas that cook in less than two minutes —  on the increasingly bustling nightlife corridor.

Since opening in 2012, the &pizza brand has been in expansion mode, opening a U Street store last year and a Brookland location that actually  opens Monday as well. &pizza has several more locations in development; no word on whether Taylor owners Casey Patten and David Mazza plan to turn Pizza Parts & Service into its own chain.
