D.C. to get its second Trader Joe’s

Coming soon to the U Street corridor: D.C.’s second Trader Joe’s.

The District issued a tenant fit-out permit Friday for a 15,108-square-foot TJ’s at The JBG Cos.’ Louis at 14th mixed-use project at 1920 14th St. NW. The work will include new floors, walls and finishes. The store, steps from the U Street Metro station, can hold a total of 391 people.

Consumer Reports ranks Trader Joe’s as the second-best supermarket in the United States. It’s one of those stores most neighborhoods want, and few get.

Nine blocks to the south of U Street is the P Street Whole Foods. A few blocks to the north and east, JBG is vying to build a Harris Teeter, ranked by Consumer Reports as the sixth best supermarket, as part of its proposed mixed-use project at Florida and Sherman avenues.

U Street is nearing the holy trio of grocery options.

Because Supreme Court Justices have to eat, right?
