New York City zoo welcomes 5 orphaned coyote pups

NEW YORK (AP) — Five orphaned coyote pups that were rescued in Massachusetts have a new home at a New York City zoo.

Queens Zoo officials say the one male and four female coyotes were born around the end of March. Three are siblings, and the other two are unrelated.

The pups were orphaned at such a young age they would have died in the wild without their mothers to feed them and protect them.

They were taken to the zoo from a rehabilitator in Massachusetts. They were moved into their own exhibit this month.

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Queens Zoo specializes in animals from the Americas.

Zoo director Scott Silver says the five pups are the only coyotes on exhibit. An older coyote has been retired and is not on view anymore.
