HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — Harrisonburg is considering buying and renovating the home of its founder.
Thomas Harrison’s home is owned by Asbury United Methodist Church. Built around 1750, it’s the oldest structure in the city and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Daily News-Record (http://bit.ly/1stxRf4 ) reports that the City Council plans to consider on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding providing for the city’s purchase and renovation of the home.
According to the memorandum, the city would pay $565,000 to acquire the house and nearly 8,000 square feet of property from the church. The church also would receive a portion of land adjacent to it.
The city and the Margaret Grattan Weaver Foundation would each contribute $500,000 to renovate the house.
