BALTIMORE (AP) — Court records show that a second Baltimore police officer has been charged in the cutting of a pet dog’s throat.
Fifty-two-year-old Thomas Schmidt of Abingdon was charged Thursday with animal cruelty and malfeasance in office. He was released on bail and a trial is scheduled for July 28.
Schmidt had been suspended with pay since June 19. A voicemail seeking comment left on a number listed to him was not immediately returned.
Police say on June 14, a female Shar-Pei named Nala was killed after police responded to a report that she had bitten a woman. Authorities say Officer Jeffrey Bolger cut the animal’s throat with a knife, and Schmidt is alleged to have held the dog down.
Bolger was charged with animal cruelty and was suspended without pay.
