2 men charged with impersonating Va. Beach police

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Two men have been charged with impersonating Virginia Beach police officers.

Virginia Beach police spokeswoman Tonya Borman says 24-year-old Matthew Storm Marshburn and 27-year-old Brian Keith Cope were charged this week.

Borman says the men were wearing civilian clothes when they approached a group of teenagers last month, pulled out badges and identified themselves as police officers.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/13RhpB7 ) reports Virginia Beach police were called after the encounter.

Borman says officers are required to show identification along with badges if asked. Dispatchers also can be called to verify an officer’s identity, work location and supervisor’s name.
