$1m gang violence initiative launched in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Authorities have launched a $1 million initiative to reduce gang and gun violence in Norfolk.

Attorney General Mark R. Herring, Rep. Bobby Scott and Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim announced the community-based effort on Tuesday in a news release.

The initiative will be funded with a $500,000 federal grant and $500,000 of asset forfeiture funds.

The officials say the initiative includes strategic prosecutions, two additional prosecutors for the region, policing strategies driven by data, and a community-based outreach, education and prevent effort.

One of the additional prosecutors will be assigned to the Norfolk Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. The other will be assigned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. They will be designated as both assistant attorneys general and special assistant U.S. attorneys.
