Navy: Aircraft carrier helps rescue 2 fishermen

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Navy says a Virginia-based aircraft carrier helped rescue two fishermen off the coast of Florida.

The Navy says the fishermen took to their life raft after unsuccessfully fighting an electrical fire aboard their vessel. The fishermen were the only two aboard the fishing boat and did not suffer any injuries.

The Navy says the USS Theodore Roosevelt assisted Naval Air Warfare Center vessel 38 with the rescue about 90 miles off the coast of Florida on Monday.

Watchstanders aboard the Roosevelt saw a rescue flare around 4:30 a.m. and coordinated rescue efforts with the other vessel, which was also in the area with the Roosevelt conducting coordinated training.

An HH-60H Seahawk helicopter flew the fishermen from the Roosevelt to Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, following their evaluation.
