Chesapeake Bay states getting US funding for bay

ASHLAND, Va. (AP) — Federal officials are delivering nearly $10 million in grant money to the Chesapeake Bay states, including hundreds of thousands of dollars to Virginia and West Virginia.

The funding announced Tuesday in Ashland is intended to help the states lower pollution flowing into the bay, which is amid a multi-billion-dollar federally directed restoration.

The recipients of the grants were named by the Chesapeake Bay Program and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

One-third of the funding is destined for projects in West Virginia and Virginia. They include $200,000 to the Piedmont Environmental Council in Virginia, to plan and implement stormwater improvements; and $200,000 for oyster reef restoration in the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach.

In West Virginia, Trout Unlimited Inc. will use $300,000 to work with landowners to reduce sediment runoff.
