Navy Region Mid-Atlantic undergoes command change

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Navy command that’s responsible for overseeing shore activities and facilities in 20 states is getting a new leader.

Rear Adm. Rick Williamson will relieve Rear Adm. Dixon Smith as commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic on Thursday.

The ceremony will be held at Naval Station Norfolk, which is one of 14 installations on the East Coast the command is in charge of.

Adm. Bill Gortney, commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command, will be the keynote speaker.

Williamson previously served as commander of Navy Region Southeast, as well as Navy Region Midwest.
