FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Transportation officials hope to transform a heavily congested stretch of Interstate 66 in northern Virginia by adding express lanes, a rapid bus system and a park-and-ride network.
The proposed changes to the 25-mile stretch of highway between Haymarket and Tysons Corner were announced Thursday.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will first study the environmental impact of the project and then take public comments. Construction could begin in 2017, and it’s expected to cost between $2 billion and $3 billion.
The express lanes would be similar to those being built on I-95 in Prince William and Stafford counties. They’d be free for vehicles with at least three people inside, while all other drivers would have to pay tolls.
