Va. pioneer Maggie L. Walker to be honored

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The National Park Service has scheduled events this weekend through Tuesday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maggie L. Walker, the pioneering businesswoman.

An art show and tour are among the activities scheduled at the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site in downtown Richmond and nearby. Most of the events are aimed at children and families.

On Tuesday, a celebration of Walker’s life will be held at a Jackson Ward church and conclude with a procession to her home.

Walker was a national activist for the rights of African Americans and women. She was the first African-American woman in the U.S. to become president of a chartered bank.
