Teen indicted in attack, child’s death in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Richmond teenager has been indicted on charges stemming from the May assault of a young girl and the death of her brother.

A grand jury Monday indicted 16-year-old Mairese Jershon Washington on charges related to the death the 8-year-old and the assault of his 12-year-old sister.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1oBSkjv) that Washington is charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding and strangulation.

Prosecutors had said Washington would be tried as an adult because he’s older than 14 and faces a murder charge.

Neighbors and relatives have said that the 8-year-old was trying help his 12-year-old sister when he was hit in the head with a brick. He died at the scene and his sister was taken to a hospital.

An aunt of the siblings says the girl is OK.
