Suspect jumps off Va. bridge, search continues

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia State Police team is searching the Appomattox River for a suspect who jumped off a bridge during a chase.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the chase began Friday evening after Trooper W.K. Johnson attempted to stop a vehicle in Colonial Heights for an equipment violation. The vehicle fled and then stopped about a minute later in the middle of the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge on Route 1 between Colonial Heights and Petersburg.

Geller says the male driver got out of the vehicle and jumped over the bridge’s railing. The bridge is about 75 feet above the river.

The Virginia State Police Search & Recovery Team resumed a search for the man Sunday morning.
