Police ID man killed by train on trestle in Va.

CHILHOWIE, Va. (AP) — Police have identified a man who was hit and killed by a train while fishing from a trestle in Smyth County.

The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office says 52-year-old Louis Perry of Chilhowie (CHILHL’-how-ee) was with a 6-year-old Abingdon girl and a 7-year-old boy when the accident occurred Sunday near Chilhowie.

The Norfolk Southern train also struck and killed the girl, who hasn’t been identified. Searchers found the boy in a field southeast of the trestle.

The sheriff’s office says the boy told investigators that he lay down and hung onto the railroad ties on the trestle’s edge. He was taken to a hospital for observation and then released.

Norfolk Southern spokesman Robin Chapman says trestles are private property and have no trespassing signs.
