New Va. jail to start accepting inmates Monday

FRONT ROYAL, Va. (AP) — A new regional jail in Warren County is scheduled to begin accepting inmates next week.

The 375-bed Rappahannock Shenandoah Warren Regional Jail will officially open on July 1 but some prisoners will arrive Monday.

Existing jails in Rappahannock, Shenandoah and Warren counties will be closed.

The new jail is located about 3 miles north of Front Royal.

The Winchester Star (http://bit.ly/1oGucPU ) reports that more than 100 local government and law enforcement officials attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility on Tuesday.

Warren County Administrator Doug Stanley estimated the project’s cost was about $71 million. The state is providing nearly $33 million and the three counties will split the remaining cost.
