NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The family of a man shot and killed by Norfolk police is questioning the officers’ handling of the incident.
Relatives of 35-year-old David Latham tell media outlets that he was mentally ill. His mother and two aunts say police had been called to help him get psychiatric care several times in the past.
Norfolk police officer Daniel Hudson says an officer shot Latham after the man threatened him with a knife.
The shooting occurred Friday night at the residence of Latham’s parents, where he lived.
His mother, Audrey Latham, says police were called after he threatened his brother with a knife. She says he didn’t threaten the officers.
The police department is investigating the shooting. It was the third fatal police shooting in Norfolk in eight days.
