Virginia beats North Carolina 3-2 in ACC tourney

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Derek Fisher had an RBI single in the eighth inning to help Virginia beat North Carolina 3-2 on Friday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Brandon Cogswell had three hits for the third-seeded Cavaliers (44-12), who managed just six hits on the night. But relievers Whit Mayberry and Nick Howard kept the Tar Heels off balance.

Mayberry (6-1) earned the win, allowing one earned run in 2 2-3 innings of work.

Wood Myers had four hits and had the two-run homer in the seventh that tied it for the seventh-seeded and reigning champion Tar Heels (33-25), who fell to 0-2 in pool play.

Zach Rice (2-3) took the loss. Both of the runs allowed by starter Benton Moss were unearned through 6 2-3 innings.

The win sent sixth-seeded Maryland to the Sunday’s championship game out of Pool B. UNC plays Maryland on Saturday, while Virginia faces second-seeded Florida State.
