DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — Relocation of dozens of unmarked graves found at a planned industrial park in Danville is nearing an end.
Seventy-two graves have been excavated at the site of the former Thomas Fearn plantation. They are being moved to another section of the property.
Archaeologist Stuart Fiedel with the Louis Berger Group says excavation of the remaining eight to 10 graves is expected to be completed by the end of this week.
Fiedel tells The Danville Register & Bee (http://bit.ly/1irTTKy ) that some coffin nails, coffin wood fragments and scraps of fabric believed to be from coffin linings have been found. But only one small bone fragment has been found.
The plantation dates to the 1770s. The city bought the site for industrial development in 2011.
