Police respond to nearly 1,000 crashes in Va.

WASHINGTON — As an intense storm descended on the region, Virginia State Police say officers responded to nearly 1,000 crashes and just over 900 disabled vehicles between 4 p.m. Wednesday and 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Two people died in storm-related crashes, one in Loudoun County Thursday and one in Halifax County Wednesday.

Police say in addition to the 995 crashes and 904 disabled vehicles, dispatch centers fielded 3,348 calls for service. Most of the crashes have involved damaged vehicles.

Police continue to ask people to stay off the roads. Police ask that people not call 911 or use #77 for road conditions.

Here’s how the crashes break down by region:

  • Fairfax Division: 78 traffic crashes and 172 disabled vehicles. Police handled 510 calls for service.
  • Richmond Division: 291 traffic crashes and 139 disabled vehicles. Police handled 648 total calls for service.
  • Culpeper Division: 80 traffic crashes and 103 disabled vehicles. Police handled 328 total calls for service.
  • Appomattox Division: 153 traffic crashes and 88 disabled vehicles. Police handled 378 calls for service.
  • Wytheville Division: 76 traffic crashes and 122 disabled vehicles. Police handled 390 calls for service.
  • Chesapeake Division: 183 traffic crashes and 83 disabled vehicles. Police handled 513 calls for service.
  • Salem Division: 134 traffic crashes and 197 disabled vehicles. Police handled 581 calls for service.
