Weekend Wakeup: A light weekend for HOT Lanes project

WASHINGTON – Get ready for road work in all three jurisdictions this weekend closing some lanes and causing some delays.

I-95 HOT Lanes, Virginia

On Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the HOV lanes from Turkeycock Run (just north of Edsall Road) to Route 1 (Richmond Highway) will be closed for drilled shafts, ITS conduit activities, paving, excavation and drainage operations. Traffic will be directed to stay on the main line. The east lane will be closed on the I-95 HOV Lanes from half a mile north of the Cardinal Drive overpass to half a mile south of the Cardinal Drive overpass for earthwork. But overall this is a quiet weekend for the HOT Lanes project.

“This is the first weekend in several weeks that we haven’t completely shut down all lanes to hang steel girders on new bridges,” says VDOT Megaprojects spokeswoman Michelle Holland. “We will have our next major steel lift and major closure of I-95 South on the weekend of August 23.”

VDOT officials also want to remind drivers that starting Monday, HOV lanes northbound will close at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. Southbound HOV lanes will open up at noon, instead of 1 p.m. This is to ease traffic related to HOT Lanes work in Prince William County and changes related to BRAC. The new HOV rules will last until mid-October.

Silver Line, Virginia

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority will be closing several lanes during the overnight hours this weekend to work on the final stages of Phase 1 of the Silver Line.

The right lane of the eastbound Dulles Connector Road will be closed near Route 123 on Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. will be closed for overhead work.

Two left lanes on the Dulles Toll Road in both directions near Wiehle Avenue in Reston will shut down on Saturday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Sunday from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. for work on the pedestrian bridge for the Wiehle-Reston East station on the Silver Line.

Wiehle Ave. near the Dulles Toll Road exit in Reston will have one right lane closed from Sunday at 9:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. to work on traffic lights.

Eastbound Dulles Access Highway will be closed near Route 123 on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for roadwork. Vehicles will be sent onto the Dulles Toll Road just after the toll plaza bypassing the fee.

Expect turn lane closures on stretches of Route 123 at Tysons Boulevard, International Drive and Galleria Drive during the overnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Full night closures of up to 15 minutes may take place on roads that intersect Route 7 when paving machines cross over the intersections during the overnight on Saturday and Sunday. Intersections include Springhill Road, Gosnell Road, Westpark Drive, Tyco Road and Westwood Center Drive.
