Voters OK levee to keep Huntington from flooding

WASHINGTON – Fairfax County voters overwhelmingly approved a $30 million bond issue to build a levee and a pumping station for the Huntington area, according to unofficial election results.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which studied the area that’s known to flood, recommended a levee and pumping station as the most cost effective way to protect the homes in the Alexandria section of the county.

Huntington has flooded four times in the last 10 years, most recently during Superstorm Sandy when an evacuation was ordered. During that storm, the water did not make it into homes, but in other storms Huntington’s 180 homes have been flooded as the waters of Cameron Run rose.

This election’s Stormwater Bond was the second time such a bond referendum has been suggested. A similar effort failed to even get on the ballot after the 2006 flooding.

The results are unofficial until certified by the State Board of Elections, which has all of the results of the 2012 election.
