WASHINGTON – Happy first weekend of August! Just because summer is flying by that doesn’t mean events around the region are slowing down. Learn about a former president, check out some LEGOS and hear tunes from local, young musicians.
Head to downtown Blacksburg for the 32nd annual Steppin’ Out Festival, which features live music, food, arts and crafts and sidewalk sales. More than 200 artists and craftspeople from around the country will be selling their goods. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
Young ladies take over the 9:30 Club Saturday for the fifth annual Girls Rock! DC showcase, which features 8-to 18-year-olds rocking out to original tunes. The girls performs songs they learned during a five-day music camp which teaches them how to play an instrument and write music. Stop by to check out their tunes and support local kids from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $10. Check the 930 website for information.
For a history lesson, head to Studio Theatre in Northwest D.C. this weekend to learn about the seventh president of the United States. “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” is set in 18th-century Tennessee and tells the story of the young southerner before he became a Democrat and took the White House. Variety calls the bold production “provocative” and “scathing,” but says it is filled with “zany humor.” Tickets are $46 to $69 and can be purchased online or by calling 202-332-3300.
The largest LEGO fair in the country comes to the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly Saturday and Sunday. Fire is the theme for this year’s BrickFair LEGO Festival, so get ready for some spectacular plastic flames. Don’t miss the robot competition or the 70 tables of vendors. Tickets are $10. And even though it’s not technically on the weekend, check out jazz master Pat Metheny perform with his Unity Band at the Birchmere Aug. 7 and 8. The new red hot quartet is fresh a European tour and ready to groove. Show time is 7:30 p.m. Check the website for tickets.
