Bubka wins 3rd term as Ukraine’s Olympic chief

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Pole vault great Sergei Bubka has been re-elected president of Ukraine’s national Olympic committee.

Bubka, the only candidate, secured a third four-year term. He received 108 votes in favor and one against.

Bubka has headed the committee since 2005.

A six-time world champion in the pole vault, he won the gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics for the Soviet Union and broke the world record 35 times in his career.

Bubka had a leading role in the Ukrainian city of Lviv’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. The bid was dropped in June amid Ukraine’s deepening political and security crisis.

Bubka is also a vice president of the International Association of Athletics Federations and an executive board member of the IOC.
