Lt. gov. to travel to Mideast to plug Mich. water

November 11, 2009 - 12:11pm

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Lt. Gov. John Cherry is heading to the Mideast to lure businesses with Michigan's abundant water.

Cherry is leaving Saturday and will return Monday, Nov. 23. He'll spend most of the trip in Israel speaking to businesses in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. He'll also stop in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm visited Israel and Jordan a year ago to recruit businesses with ties to alternative energy, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, defense and homeland security.

Michigan Economic Development Corp. officials will accompany Cherry. Michigan is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes and has abundant water resources that could be of interest to foreign firms.

Cherry is one of three Democrats and six Republicans running to replace Granholm next year.
